The government has allocated GH¢200 million to support victims of a recent coastal erosion that swept through the southeastern coastline of the country.

The money would be made available through the Ministry of Works and Housing to finance initiatives to mitigate the challenges confronting residents in disaster-prone areas.

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced this on the floor of parliament when he presented the 2025 budget on Tuesday, 11 March 2025.

“Mr. Speaker, in response to the recent tidal waves disaster that displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South constituency, we have also allocated enough resources to the Ministry of Works and Housing to address the challenge.

“We have also allocated an amount of GH¢200 million to support the victims of tidal wave disaster that recently displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu south constituency”, he said.

Mr. Forson, was, however, not detailed on how the fund would be spent, as the allocation followed a directive by President Mahama when he visited Agavedzi, the most wrecked community, on March 6, 2025.

A recent coastal erosion swept over 100 units of rooms into the ocean displaying over 600 residents.

The victims are currently living in the open, sleeping in sandy areas and makeshift structures, in areas prone to public health hazards. The sea also broke into graves exposing mortal remains.
