Aide to the former Vice President, Miracles Aboagye, says Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has not yet officially begun his campaign as a flagbearer hopeful in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) upcoming 2026 presidential primaries.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, July 7, Mr. Aboagye clarified that despite public interest and speculation, Dr. Bawumia has spent the months following the 2024 general election focusing on internal party rebuilding rather than personal political ambition.
“Dr Bawumia has not even started this campaign yet,” he stated.
According to him, the former Vice President has prioritised restructuring and reorganisation within the NPP, a process he stated is essential for the party’s long-term viability.
“He has, since the elections, spent his time and prioritised the restructuring and reorganisation of the party. As you can recall, about a month ago, he concluded the Thank-You tour with the party leadership,” Mr Aboagye added.
He explained that following that tour, Dr. Bawumia has been involved in a series of closed-door engagements with key stakeholders at national, regional, and constituency levels to help fortify the party’s internal systems.
With just 12 days to the NPP’s highly anticipated Delegates Conference on July 19, speculation is rife about who will step forward to lead the party into the next electoral cycle. However, Mr Aboagye hinted that a formal announcement from Dr. Bawumia could follow the conference.
“We are looking forward to the 19th July conference. Most probably, right after the conference, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will formally indicate his intention or otherwise, and then we can take it from there,” he said.
“But for now, you can see everything that is going [on] as preliminary. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has not started his campaign at all,” Mr Aboagye reiterated.
