22 students get Mensin Gold scholarships

Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited has granted financial assistance to 22 students to pursue various programmes in tertiary institutions across the country.

The mining company says the gesture is part of its corporate social responsibility through the Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel.

The beneficiaries were selected through a fair and a transparent process on overarching criteria of the student being needy but brilliant and also for pursuing programmes that fall under Science, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),

 Among the awardees are four students studying Medicine, one studying Physician Assistantship and one studying Dental Surgery. Four students are into Engineering (including a young lady from Adzenkye), two into Nursing and Midwifery and One into Biological Sciences. 

The Education Committee of Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel that did the selection was chaired by Mr. Ben Johnson Oduro, a representative of the paramount chief of Anhwiaso Traditional Council.

Speaking at a short ceremony to award the students, chairman of the Mensin Gold's Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel, Isaac Osei Yeboah, said the motivation for the investment is to positively influence the lives of the people and communities in which they operate.

"The three main assessment criteria employed by the Committee is evidence of need, evidence of brilliance and relevance of course of study to the local community. Investing in people they live where we operate is one of our priorities. We always want to put smiles on their faces," he said.

Isaac Osei Yeboah says they were inspired by a quote of Brad Henry who once remarked: "No other investment yields as great a return as the investment in education. An educated workforce is the foundation of every community and the future of every economy."

He said the Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel recognises that their investment in the lives of the ones will set a strong foundation for the future of the local communities thereby enhancing the local economic well-being.

In the 2017/2018 academic year, the Resolute Foundation started assisting brilliant but needy students in their pursuit to undertake their respective academic endeavours. 

The students are pursuing courses in areas such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Business, Fashion and Design, Medical Diagnostic Imaging, Science Education, Physician Assistantship, Midwifery and General Nursing.

General Manager of Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited (MGBL), Mr. Bennett Kunkyebe in his address said he was happy for the second award to some brilliant but needy students and urged the students to learn very hard to justify their qualification for assistance in the next academic year. 

He said the company under Care and Maintenance was doing all of the investments in the communities of interest to assist in boosting the local economy.

 A Director of Mensin Gold, Mr. Kwame Ofosuhene Apenteng said the parent company, Resolute Mining Limited in Perth, Australia, has very high interest in education in the communities that it operates in.

He explained that was the reason the company is highly committed to contributing its quota in to provide for the educational needs of the communities in which MGBL operates.

"I am admonishing parents and guardians of the awardees to take the education of their wards serious so that they all contribute to government’s high commitment in educating the majority of Ghanaians," he stated.

 Municipal Chief Executive of the Bibiani–Anhwiaso–Bekwai Municipal Assembly,  Alfred Amoah, who was the special guest of the ceremony congratulated the twenty-two awardees and said they had been fortunate to receive the gesture from Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited through the Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel. 

He admonished the awardees to be ambassadors of the Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel and gave assurance that the Assembly is always ready to assist the mining company in any endeavour that is within its mandate.

Municipal Director of Education, Madam Mercy Emefa Boateng, inidicated her happniness in the gesture.

"Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited has education as a development pillar as part of its corporate social responsibilities through the ever-impressing Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel," he said.

She however requested of the RFAP to consider students in the Humanities and where possible SHS needy students.

In February 2017, Mensin Gold Bibiani Limited (MGBL) instituted the Resolute Foundation Advisory Panel (RFAP) to manage and spearhead its community consultation and development initiatives for the communities of interest as part of its corporate social responsibility to Ghana, especially the communities of interest.
