Three Akpeteshie retailers at the New and Old Tema lorry Station have been arrested by the Ministry's Divisional Police Command in Accra for selling their products at the stations.
The suspects, Mercy Ampony, 38, Paulina Nosi, 35, and Mary Dagba, 37 are in police custody and will soon appear in court to face prosecution.
A fourth person took to his heels when he saw the police but his gallons of akpeteshie and other bitters were seized.
The Divisional Commander of the Ministry's Divisional Police Command,
Chief Superintendent Joseph Oklu Gyamera tells Asempa News the operation was done to reduce the rampant accidents on our roads as drunk-driving has been identified as one of the major factors that causes accidents in the country and stressed the operation will be extended to other bus terminals nationwide in a sustainable manner to curb road accidents.
“It is against the Accra Metropolitan Assembly by-laws to sell alcoholic beverages at the lorry stations and also illegal to sell without license by the authority” he said.
