3 killed by suspected Boko Haram militants in Cameroon

A local mayor suspects Boko Haram militants cross the border from Nigeria into northern Cameroon

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed three people in the Far North region of Cameroon.

The attackers struck early on Monday, killing three members of a self-defence group, said the traditional chief and mayor of Mozogo commune, Mahamat Chetima Abba.

He added that jihadists had crossed the border from Nigeria, and attacked Kiliari in Nguetchewe.

Boko Haram has ramped up attacks in Cameroon’s Far North region in recent days.

On Saturday, attackers killed a school teacher in the village of Ouzal in Mayo Moskota.

Boko Haram started fighting in Nigeria in 2009 and has spread to neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

At least 37,500 people have been killed and more than three million people have been displaced in the last decade, according to the United Nations.

This most recent spate of attacks come just days after Cameroon's President Paul Biya told Cameroonians in his New Year Address that the actions of the militants have been significantly reduced by the country’s security forces.
