The Ashaiman Circuit Court has remanded 28 out of the 32 persons arrested in connection with the riot that broke out at the Tema Manhean last Friday in prison custody to reappear on Thursday September 30, 2010. Four juveniles, Tetteh Elvis, James Koranteng, Amarh Isaac and Kofi Annan were however granted bail in the sum of GH¢10,000.00 each with two sureties (who should be either their parents or guardians) to be justified and they are expected to report at the police station every Thursday. The atmosphere at court was filled with a lot of emotions, while the suspects were carried away from the premises of the court, as tears filled the eyes of their loved ones; sympathisers and themselves. Their pleas were not taken. Remanding the suspects, the court presided over by Justice Tsatsu Yaw Azumah said "The suspects were being remanded to allow police enough time to conduct investigations into the matter. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Enyonam Klu, said the police had information at about 6.00am last Friday that a group of people around Beach '5' at the Tema Fishing Harbour were preparing to attack the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) TOA yard at the area. A team of police men were dispatched to the area to maintain law and order and when they got there they found that a bulldozer, a pick-up and three offices of the GPHA were on fire and, therefore, the police attempted to drive the people away. "This subsequently resulted in a clash as the people threw stones and other missiles while others shot at the police with locally manufactured guns. They were arrested at the scene and its environs", ASP Klu disclosed. Counsels for the suspects, Lawyers Adomako Acheampong and Mike Oquaye Jnr, pleaded with the court to admit their clients into bail while the police continued with their investigations, but the court refused.
