Thirty-eight herbal and alternative medicine centres and practitioners have been honoured for upholding excellence in that area of healthcare in the country.

The awards organised by AfricMedia Galaxy, a leading events management firm in Ghana, celebrated individuals and companies in the traditional and alternative medicine industry for their outstanding achievements in their various fields.

They were presented plaques and citations at the 6th West Africa all Herbal/Alternative Medicine Practitioners Conference and Awards, held in Accra over the weekend.

Over 25 other award winners were given plaques, and citations at the awards night on the theme: ‘Acknowledging alternative through genuine practices’.

Deputy Minister for Health, Mahama Asei Seini commended herbal and alternative medicine practitioners for their contribution to healthcare system in Ghana.

He said they have provided the world's population with safe, effective and affordable plant medicines to treat disease and enhance general health and wellbeing.

But for them, Mr Seini said majority of Ghanaians especially in rural areas will not have access to primary healthcare.

The deputy Health Minister added that, herbal and alternative medicine was gaining trust because of high standards adopted by practitioners.

Mahama Asei Seini charged them to collaborate with research institutions to enable them compete with their international counterparts.

The Executive Director of AfricMedia Galaxy, Joseph Egyir Sarfo was elated at the interest shown practitioners.

He indicated that, the award scheme is a platform to showcases and celebrates excellence and the outstanding contributions of traditional and alternative medicine practitioners in West Africa.

Mr. Egyir Sarfo thanked the Ministry of Health for its continuous support and assured that, his organization is poised at promote the herbal and alternative medicine sector in the country.
