Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti South Region, in collaboration with the Kumasi Central Police Service, has arrested five individuals for their alleged involvement in illegal water connections.
The arrests took place on Wednesday across multiple areas in Kumasi, including Danyame, Dakodwom, Kwadaso Estate, and Santasi Apire.

According to officials, the suspects were picked up after failing to settle surcharges totaling Gh₵31,803.97 issued over their illegal connections.
Out of the five, three have since made payments amounting to Gh₵11,515.00, while the remaining two are still in police custody and face further action if they do not comply with payment conditions.

GWL has raised alarm over the growing trend of illegal water tapping in the Ashanti Region, identifying it as a major contributor to Non-Revenue Water (NRW)—water that is produced but not accounted for due to theft, leaks, or other unauthorized use.
Acting Regional Chief Manager, Madam Innocentia Kuupiel, praised the support of law enforcement in carrying out the arrests and emphasized the need for continued partnership to deter such acts.
“Management’s dedication to fostering relationships with the police and the media will help to eradicate this menace,” she said.

She further encouraged people to join the water company to eradicate illegal water connections as they vow to provide good service.
“Ghana Water Limited is committed to meeting the demands of its customers and entreats that all and sundry should join the fight against Illegal Water Connections, as such acts deny the company the resources to enhance operations,” she added.
The utility company reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with law enforcement to root out illegal water connections and secure water supply systems across the Ashanti Region.
