Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has clarified that the upcoming demonstration scheduled for 5th May is not solely a New Patriotic Party (NPP) initiative but a broader national call to defend the independence of the judiciary.

"Our demonstration on Monday is not about our party (NPP) or parties; it is about protecting the institutional integrity of our republic, it is about drawing a line in defence of the constitution, and it is about telling those in power you may have your turn, but you do not own the state. The framers of our constitution understood that a democracy of our judiciary without independence is no democracy at all," he explained.

Speaking at a press conference on 1st May, Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that the protest, which has been endorsed by several opposition political parties, seeks to register public disapproval over the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

He encouraged all Ghanaians who care about democracy and the rule of law to join the planned protest.

"Our fellow country women and men, we invite you to join us; this is not just about the few political parties determined to go on the street," he added.

The suspension of the Chief Justice has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures and some civil society groups, who have described it as politically motivated and damaging to democratic governance.
