Police in Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, are on a manhunt for three gunmen who shot and killed a currency dealer before bolting with an unspecified amount of money.
The 63-year old Hasmin Salifu is believed to have struggled with the assailants who shot him three times and fled on a motorbike with unspecified local and foreign currency.
Manhyia Divisional Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah, said the police are determined to apprehend the men who killed Mr Salifu at about 2 p.m on Sunday afternoon all because of money.
"We have reasons to suspect that these guys who shot the deceased were after his money but he resisted; that's the reason they shot him three times.
"In fact, he did struggle with the first guy so well as he is reported to be a very strong guy, so the second guy with a gun shot him three times and that took him away from us," he told Nhyira FM.
Alabar is one of Kumasi’s major commercial hubs predominantly controlled by people of Muslim with a Northern background.
It is known for its huge concentration of ‘black market' currency dealers.
Police say the assailants took advantage of a secluded location to attack the man who reportedly put up initial resistance as the suspects sought to snatch his money bag.
The pistol-wielding men shot Hashim three times at close range in the arm and chest.
Manhyia Divisional Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah assures police will do everything possible to track the suspects.
Delivering a message from the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah said the police is going to take such line to get them arrested.
This was after he led a team including Regional Crime Officer, ACP Peter Baba to visit the crime scene and also to the family to commiserate with the relatives.
A sister of the deceased, Fati Nasiru says the family will miss the man who was survived by a wife and eight children.
