Eight people on Friday presented their nomination forms at the Weija Constituency Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Weija in Accra to contest the upcoming NDC parliamentary primaries to unseat the New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey. They presented their forms around 12 noon to the Secretary of the Weija branch of the party, Mr Nunoo Acquah. They are Mr Carl Wilson, a former National Security Operative; Mr Samuel Yaw Asamoah, a Sales Officer; Bright Demoji, a Marketing Officer; Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, a Businessman and Mr Gideon Aryeequaye, a Journalist. The rest are Mr Emmanuel Adotey, Mr Kwesi Tamakloe and Mr David Nii Abossey. Mr Carl Wilson later spoke to the press and said delegates at the last NDC 2008 elections fully supported him but he bowed out to save certain situations. He said as a political scientist, he withdrew from the race to support the party to win the last general elections. “I want to rejoin the race to strengthen the party at the constituency and to give the electorate a better choice,” he stated. He said his vision is to join parliament and do something for his people and to assist in the development of the country. Mr Gideon Aryeequaye, who was accompanied by brass band, expressed the hope that the elections would held in peace and harmony. “The seat is in transition and we have to recapture it from the New Patriotic Party,” he said. He said the NDC nearly recaptured the seat from the NPP in 2008 and urged all losers to rally behind whoever emerged as the winner to wrest the seat for the NDC. Mr David Nii Abossey Breide, the Assemblyman for the New Weija Electoral Area, said as an educationist, he had embarked on numerous projects to empower women and the youth in the area but would like to go to parliament to do it on a larger scale. He said if he won the parliamentary seat, he would create a special office to take care of both the NDC and the NPP towards the development of the area. Broadcast Journalist and Television Newscaster, Gideon Aryeequaye, openly admitted that he had always been an active member of the NDC. The TV News anchor of ETV-Ghana was joined by a very large group of supporters from the Weija Constituency. Prior to the filing of his nomination, he disclosed that he had always been a politician, but due to his objectivity and neutrality as host of his morning shows, it was difficult to tell. “It’s difficult to tell where my lineage goes. I have decided to take up this position because a lot of people wanted me to. I look like a very credible candidate I must confess ... I have been a member of the NDC since 1992 and even before 1992. I call myself a cadre because back in the days of hunger, we were sharing Banku and Yellow Corn Kenkey at the Community Centre. Of course, Gideon has been there from the scratch... I think I am the one that can unseat the incumbent, (Mrs Ayorkor Botwe) ...”, he said. According to him, for about six years now he had been pressed to contest the seat by well-wishers and party activists in the constituency, but decided to offer other candidates the opportunity. “NDC has always been my party ... Chairman Rawlings is a friend of mine ... my heart has been with the NDC since those days ... ,” he said. In a special message to his constituents, he said although he could not address all the numerous problems facing them, he would act as a liaison; soliciting for funds from several quarters to help develop the constituency.
