The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that 80 per cent of public sector workers in the country earn less than GH¢3000 on a monthly basis.
Out of the 688,000 persons employed in the public sector, 533,179 of them earn less than GH¢3000.
This is contained in the survey report titled Ghana 2022 earnings: inequality in the public sector report released by the Government Statistician, Prof Samuel Kobina Annim on Thursday.
According to him, “80% of the public sector workers earn less than GH₵3,000. If you take every five employees, four out of them are earning less than GH₵3000.”
“On the other hand, if you have the disparities if your take home is on a minimum of GH₵418 relative to a maximum of GH₵33,000.
“Look at this rate, minimum GH₵418, maximum about GH₵33,000 and because 80% earn less than GH ₵3,000 you get an average figure of GH₵2,594.
"Despite the conversation on earnings in politics, the first basic thing we do is put all of us in the public sector in groups of 10 in ascending order based on our earnings,” Prof. Annim stated.
The report further revealed that 104,349 people earn between GH₵3000 to GH₵4999, while 20,606 persons earn between GH₵5000 to GH₵9999.
The report indicated that 6,225 people earn over GH₵10,000 a month.
