About 800 students may be denied their right to sit for this year’s West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the Asuogyaman district, according to the area Member of Parliament. Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw noted that it is not only are final examinations students being denied the opportunity; other students are also being prevented from writing mock examinations. The MP disclosed this on Asempa FM’s current affairs programme Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, where he advocated for the issue to be pursued as a national concern. He claimed that authorities in five Senior High Schools in his constituency, namely Akwamuman, Agyina, Apegusu, Anum and Boso, are set to deny over 800 students the opportunity to write their final exams due to their inability to pay school fees and registration fees. “I am just coming from the Akwamuman Secondary School where over 150 students have been denied writing the mock examinations because they couldn’t pay the school and registration fees. I went and saw these students sitting loitering around the area and I asked myself, ‘what future do they have?’" "This should call for national attention. I have about 800 students in the district who would be denied the opportunity to write the final exams due to the same issue of non-payment of fees. Many Students of Akwamuman, Agyina, Anum, Boso and Akwamuman are to be affected." "These are students to be denied the opportunity in only one district, what about the other districts across the country. We cannot destroy the future of our children because of fees,” he bellowed. The former Deputy Minister for Trade in the erstwhile Kufuor government hinted that he will be working with other MPs as a matter of urgency to arrest the situation across the country, which he described it as worrying. He entreated government to intervene in the matter because he said that the country can no longer tolerate the high rate of illiteracy that results from parents being unable to pay fees.
