The Tema Regional Office of the Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service recorded a total of 132 defilement cases in 2012.
The figure was comprised of 69 cases reported in Ashaiman, 14 apiece in New Town and Ada, eight in Sakumono, seven in Prampram, five in Tema Main and three in Community 11.
DOVVSU Tema Regional Coordinator Superintendent Rebecca Nyamah, who reported the figures above, said that including these 132 defilement cases, the Unit recorded a total of 1,409 cases last year.
She said that assault topped the list with 790 reports, while other cases included stealing, abduction, rape, death threats, attempted suicide, child abuse and sodomy.
Supt. Nyamah said out of the 1,409 total cases, 937 were from Ashaiman, 175 were from Sakumono, 108 were from Tema New Town and 59 were from Ada.
Furthermore, she said, Dodowa recorded 34 cases, while 31 came from Community 11, 29 from Prampram, 28 from Tema Unit, and 8 from Community Two.
She added that of the 1,409 reported cases, 1,273 were determined to be true while 136 were refused, and that 419 of the cases are closed while 781 are still under investigation.
According to Supt. Nyamah , the Unit also recorded a total of 1,947 non-maintenance of family-related matters last year that were not reported as criminal cases.
Out of these 1,947 cases, the Unit successfully settled as many as 1,649, while referring 207 to the Family Tribunal, 85 to the Department of Social Welfare, five to Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice and one to Federation of International Women Lawyers.
