The body of an old woman buried at the Ayigya Palace in Kumasi has been exhumed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for reburial following a chieftaincy dispute. The body of Abrewa Tawiah, who died in September and buried in October 2012, was exhumed Wednesday following disagreement between two royal factions over the rightful place for her interment. Luv FM’s Kwabena Ampratwun quoted the Gyaasehene of the area as saying that the dispute was between the current occupants of the Ayigya stool and the opposing gate to which the deceased belongs. He narrated that after the old lady’s death, “those occupying the throne asked them to bring schnapps so that they allow them to bury the woman at the royal cemetery but the family said the woman is a royal so they will not even give them water from a gutter.” As a result the occupants of the stool refused to allow the other faction to bury deceased at the royal cemetery. But the other royal family on their decided to bury Abrewa Tawiah near the royal palace. The case, he said, was taken to court which ruled that it was improper for the old lady to be buried near the royal palace, citing health reasons. On account of this ruling, KMA health authorities on Wednesday morning exhumed the body and collected the decomposed remains into refuse collection truck for reburial. Kwabena Ampretwum reported that occupants of the stools beamed with excitement when Abrewa Tawiah's body was exhumed. He said the state of decomposition of the body would have made it inappropriate to use a hearse for the reburial “looking at the smell” and “when they brought out the coffin, it was quiet weak.” Kwabena Ampratwum gathered the old lady will be reburied at the Tafo Cemetery – where unidentified bodies are buried.
