The Ghana Federation of the Disabled is asking chiefs whose traditional beliefs bar them from interacting with disabled persons to modify their stance on the matter. The plea comes on the back of criticisms leveled against President Mahama’s nominee for the Chieftaincy Ministry, Dr Henry Seiduu Daanaa. The paramount chief of the Seikwa Traditional Area, Nana Kwaku Dwomo Ankoana II, who publicly protested the nomination of the visually impaired lawyer, says it is an abomination to choose a physically-challenged person to lead a chieftaincy institution. The Seikwa chief called on the president to reassign the nominee in order to to appease the country’s chiefs. Addressing journalists in Accra today, the Ghana Federation of the Disabled also served notice that it will mobilize its members to go on the streets in protest if the chiefs accept the comments by the Omanhene of Seikwa. Joy News’ Hannah Odame reports that Federation has also called on the Omanhene of Seikwa to withdraw his statement and apologise. Yaw Debrah , the President of the Federation, argued that the Constitution of Ghana enjoins chiefs to evaluate their customs and traditions that are outmoded so that they do not affect the human development of the country. “And we expect the chief to rather reform or modify these customs rather than seeking to entrench them…which is not in the interest of persons with disability.” According to Mr Debrah, “we believe that the president actually did his homework well before nominating Dr Daanaa as the Minister-designate for the Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs but if he should subscribe or bow to the pressure of some these chiefs, we will not take it lightly but rather demonstrate our anger and frustration by going onto the streets.” The Federation has vowed that its members will flock to Parliament on Friday to show their support for Dr Daanaa as he takes his turn at the ongoing vetting of ministerial nominees.
