Police in the upper east region have allegedly shot dead, one man at Vea in the Bongo district, while protecting a contractor doing some maintenance works on the Vea Irrigation Dam, from angry protestors from the community. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 6.Joy News Upper East correspondent, Albert Sore reports that the incident occurred while the community was protesting against a contractor whose name has been given only as Adams of Eunitack Services Limited. He is alleged to have attempted to break a rock regarded as a god in the community's shrine, to be used in construction works at the Vea irrigation dam.According to spokesperson for the land and custodian of Vea, known as the Vea tindaana, Simon Baba, several other rocks they offered the contractor in place of the rock at the shrine were rejected.Members of the area have always stopped the contractor's earlier attempts to break the rock they worship. On Wednesday morning, the contractor came with police protection to make another attempt at breaking the rock - a move the community members tried to resist in a protest.Police fired warning shots in attempts to disperse the angry protestors, some of whom allegedly pelted the police with stones. The firing of the warning shots resulted in the death of a young man identified as Gideon Aniah, a final year student of the Winneba College of Education.Simon Baba, a family member of the diseased and spokesperson for the Vea Tindaana, insists that they can identify the officer who shot at Gideon.
He spoke to joy news outside the Bolgatanga hospital mortuary where the body was deposited. When JOYNEWS contacted the Upper East Regional Police commander, DCOP Bright Oduro, he was unable to give further details as he says the Police is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
