The Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana, CCG, is appealing to the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association, to reconsider their intended industrial action slated for the 11th of February 2013. The GMA issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to fix disparities in salaries of doctors, failure to which will compel them to embark on a nationwide industrial action. Deadline for the ultimatum expires this weekend but the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, FWC, is yet to correct the anomaly. The GMA leadership is scheduled to meet later today, February 7, 2013, after which a statement is expected to be issued on whether its members should embark on the intended strike. But the CCG in a release signed by Spokesperson, Bishop Prince Benny Wood, called on the GMA to respect on-going arbitration process with the FWC, to amicably address the issue which arose as a result of the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure. “We are also aware that there is an arbitration going on between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and Ghana Medical Association and urge all players to respect the process. “Much as we will not want our doctors to strike we are equally not happy with the way the situation has been handled for the past one year,” the statement said. CCG further called on FWC to be proactive in handling labour disputes to avoid the incidences of industrial actions, particularly, by groups described as essential service providers. “If we don’t expect our doctors to strike because they are engaged in essential services, we must also give them the needed respect and attention they deserve. “We call on all stake holders; the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, National Labour Commission, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance , Ghana Medical Association and Government, to collaborate in the best interest of the people of Ghana to avoid future occurrence”.
