Dr Lawrence Agyeman Sereboe, Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, said people who are overweight are likely to suffer from coronary heart diseases.
He explained that such diseases could result in heart attacks leading to sudden deaths, an incidence which had become common recently.
Dr Sereboe said this when he received a cash donation of 2000 dollars on behalf of the Centre by the United Nations Missions in Liberia (UNMIL) Ghana Battalion 16 (Ghanbatt 16) on Friday in Accra.
The donation was to aid the hospital in the treatment of heart conditions.
Dr Sereboe said smokers and those who failed to do regular exercise were
also at risk, stressing on the need for people, especially those above forty years, to go for routine medical check-ups.
This, he said, would help them know their blood sugar level and get other necessary medical attentions they deserved. .
Dr Sereboe said the treatment of heart conditions had become very expensive adding that such donations were always welcomed.
He expressed gratitude to Ghanbatt 16 saying that the support would cement the relationship that has existed between them.
Lt Col Samuel Kodzo Gameli, Commanding Officer of the Battalion, said the support was to fulfill the officers’ desire to contribute to health service delivery in the country.
He said it was also in recognition of the excellent role the Centre had played in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in the country.
"It is a seed we are sowing today and we hope it bears fruit,” he said.
