Amokwei Quaye, a 35-year-old trader who gave money to a 4-year-old pupil to buy rice and later lured her into a nearby bush and defiled her, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty to a defilement charge, was remanded and will reappear before the court on March 26.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said the victim lives with her grandmother at Ablekuma and that the accused lives in the same vicinity.
She said on February 9, the victim’s grandmother bought her some rice but the child refused to it, claiming the food was not sufficient for her.
ASP Acquah reported that the accused, a tenant in the house, then gave the victim some money to buy herself rice. She showed the money to her grandmother before leaving to get the food at about 1830 hours.
She said the grandmother waited for the victim and after she did not return for some time, she started searching for her.
At about 2010 hours, ASP Acquah said, someone saw the victim coming from a nearby bush, crying. When questioned, she explained that the accused lured her into the bush and defiled her.
A report was made to the police and the accused was arrested.
