The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), a global organization of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, under its Education Initiatives is organizing an African countries summit in Accra from 2 and 3 March, 2013. FIP, through its 127 member organizations, represents and serves more than three million practitioners and scientists around the world. It collaborates officially with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as several other notable organizations. The FIP Ghanaian partners are hosting this summit, with a number of strategically selected personnel who have the potential to advocate, promote and deliver an impactful transnational agenda. In all there are 17 participants from Ghana, Nigeria, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia and the FIP are expected to attend the event. Professor Mahama Duwiejua, the summit host notes “the event is designed to develop sustainable and significant working partnerships between African Leaders in Education and Development and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP)”. “Crucially, this summit will provide leadership opportunities for the personnel and nations involved” he adds. The summit aims to translate the FIP Education Initiatives Strategic Plan – and associated proposals – towards actions and outcomes within an African context. This will include, importantly, the FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN network (“Global Pharmacy Education Development network” GPhED). It will set a goal to further introduce the FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN cooperation to pharmacy leaders in Africa and seek opportunities for developing advanced pharmacy practice within an African context. National representation will be facilitated by Mr Joseph Nyoagbe (Registrar of Pharmacy Council, Ghana), Dr Timothy Rennie (Dean of Pharmacy, Namibia), Prof Cyril Usifoh (Immediate Past Dean of Pharmacy, Univ. of Benin, Nigeria), Prof Richard Odoi Adomi (Immediate Past Dean of Pharmacy, Makerere University, Uganda), and Dr Lungwani Muungo (Head of the Pharmacy Department, University of Zambia). Professor Ian Bates (FIPEd Development Team Director) says that the summit will explore ways of forming working relationships around common areas of interest, within the context of African and Global Leadership values and also work on how the UNITWIN mechanism can be best used to promote Leadership and Excellence in professional education development. He says “I am excited that FIP, working with our African partners and colleagues, can facilitate this important landmark event, and we have a mutual determination to ensure that this represents merely a start of a journey together, and not the end in itself”. Throughout its 101 year history, FIP's priorities have expanded both literally and figuratively to meet the needs and expectations of the profession in expanding pharmaceutical healthcare services and integrating emerging scientific developments in medicines and medicines use. Changes in pharmacy and the emergence of Pharmacy Practice as a cornerstone of the profession have led FIP to become globally visible for its advocacy on behalf of the role of the pharmacist in the provision of healthcare, while still maintaining its grounding in the pharmaceutical sciences.
