The Omanhene of the Achirensua Traditional Area, Professor Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi Ampem is urging government to ban extra classes in schools.
He is accusing some teachers of abusing the phenomenon.
He told Nhyira FM’s Kofi Asante the situation could deepen inequality in students’ academic performance.
The traditional ruler who is chairman of the Ghana Education Service Council described as academic mercenaries, teachers who charge the students illegal fees in addition to the regular salaries they receive.
“The person who should be honoured is a hero. He does things with the aim of improving society not thinking of the financial reward. You have to be a hero who commands respect or a mercenary who demands respect,” he stated.
But banning extra classes will be an uphill task.
Some teachers who spoke to Kofi Asante vehemently rejected calls for the classes to be banned.
They however suggested ways by which it will be regulated.
“I don’t support the idea that extra classes should be banned. The form ones come in the first term almost getting towards the end of the term. It means a lot of time has been wasted [and they need to catch up.
"I will support extra classes but there should be control and not to allow individual teachers to organize the classes," one of the teachers said.
Some of the pupils who spoke to Nhyira FM also kicked against banning extra classes.
