The former National Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abaryifa Karbo has stated that Volta River Authority (VRA) has no justification to ask for tariff increases in our current power crisis.
He said VRA cannot demand tariff increase from frustrated consumers who he claims do not enjoy 24 hour power supply both at home and in their offices.
Anthony Karbo was commenting on the proposed tariff increase by VRA to enable it solve the electricity crisis in the country.
The VRA says an upward adjustment of tariffs will make it financial viable to power its generators to end the recent power crisis.
But the proposal has been met with huge opposition from consumers some of whom have threatened not to pay, if the increase is approved by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Anthony Karbo said VRA’s financial crisis is as a result of its inefficiencies.
According to him, VRA has failed to retrieve the huge debts owed it by both government and the ECG and yet claims it is broke.
“If VRA is able to curtail the distribution losses, illegal connections and collect its debt from government and ECG, it will be able to solve their financial crisis rather than pressurizing the ordinary consumer” he added.
He said it is evident that VRA see consumers as the ones to pay for the debts of government and ECG that is why it wants an upward adjustment.
“Ghanaians cannot pay for your [VRA] inefficiencies. The last time they proposed an increment; they gave the same excuse but did not deliver so why should we believe them this time”.
Anthony Karbo urged VRA to rethink its decision and come out with a more pragmatic measure to solve the power crisis.
Also, the Asante Regional Secretary of NDC, Joseph Yamin who was a panelist on the programme agreed perfectly with Karbo.
He said VRA does not deserve any penny from consumers who have for years been managing with its poor service.
The NDC man called for the head of the Director of VRA, EGC and GRIDCO for their incompetence.
Joseph Yamin advocated for an alternative energy like wind or solar to complement what is available now.
