The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has in her first public speech since her appointment charged Ghanaians to faithfully discharge their responsibilities by reporting acts of corruption and all manner of wrongdoing by their fellow citizens especially public servants like the police.
Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong was addressing law students to open the 54th law week celebration of the Ghana School of Law attended by justices of the Supreme Court and lawyers.
She underscored the need for citizens to assert their rights when violated but stressed the need for people to also be mindful of their duties and responsibilities as provided by law for the smooth and fast development of the country's democracy.
She noted it was bad for citizens to evade tax or refuse to pay the right amounts for utilities through the right channels of payment.
A justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Samuel Kofi Date-Bah also noted that the country's democracy stands to benefit a great deal in Ghana's quest for accelerated development if things are done in compliance with the constitution and other laws.
His position was re-echoed by the Chief Justice Georgina Wood who spoke through a representative Justice Joseph Bawa Akamba.
The Ghana School of Law SRC week celebration, the President Samuel Acquah-Bartels said was on the theme, "The Law: An indispensable tool for the development of Ghana's democracy".
He urged law students especially to contribute their quota through educating those who did not have the benefit of training as lawyers to properly interpret and help with the enforcement of the laws of the country.
