The Ghana National Association of Teachers says it is not entirely to blame, for the falling standards of teaching in recent times. The Association was reacting to criticism by the Ghana Education Service which sought to blame teachers for the falling educational standards. On Wednesday, Education Minister Prof Naana Opoku Agyeman also served notice to lazy and non-performing teachers to either up their game or get fired. But GNAT says the Ghana Education Service cannot absolve itself from blame if at all the standards of education is falling. According to GNAT, the GES’ monitoring and remedial systems to build the capacity of non-performing teachers are weak. GNAT General Secretary, Irene Duncan Adanusah supported Education Minister’s warning to teachers, but hoped they will be offered some opportunity for professional development. She said it is worrying that teachers will be hired for several years and there will be no in-service training for them to upgrade their skills and knowledge. She cited efforts by GNAT together with international counterparts to offer service training to some teachers but she was quick to add that, GNAT alone cannot take the responsibility of training the over 100,000 teachers.
