It's amazing that despite their enormous effort and hard work, many farmers in Ghana live in poverty, penury. Many of them live from hand to mouth because often, the cost of their produce is determined by middle men and women who pay a pittance for a basketful of melons. Poor government support and the lack of investment in the sector are giving hints of an impending food crisis. For Hotline this Thursday, Luv FM's Kwabena Owusu Ampratwum has been touring the country to speak to local farmers about the state of Ghana's agriculture. He calls it A Crashing Food Basket. Why? Join the discussion on the Super Morning Show this Thursday at 8:30am
Agriculture, until recently, was the largest contributor to Ghana’s Gross Domestic product, accounting for over fifty percent.
It employs about 60 percent of the population both formal and informal, providing much needed food and foreign exchange to sustain the country. Yam and other tubers, grains such as maize, cocoa, oil palms, kola nuts, and timber are currently the main export commodities.
However, over the past years, the sector has seen marginal growth, poor crop yield and inadequate investment.
The mission of Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture is to promote sustainable agriculture and thriving agribusiness through research and technology development, effective extension and other support services to farmers, processors and traders for improved livelihood.
For many years however, it appears serious attention has not been paid to fulfilling this mission and the agricultural sector is begging for attention.
Kwabena Owusu Ampratwum has been touring various farming communities across the country to the locals about what they make of the sector.
