Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey is lamenting what he describes as over-concentration of investments in science and technology based subjects.
Professor Ernest Aryeetey who spoke to Joy News on the sidelines of a colloquium organized by the faculty of social sciences said there is the need for a thorough needs assessment to inform policy direction in the educational sector.
He said this will ensure a holistic approach to addressing the development needs of the country.
According to him, “For you to develop you need scientific processes taking place – outcomes, research, and education. I don’t have any difficulty with that, the problem for many developing countries, especially African countries, as they’ve moved resources, even if inadequate into science, they have left virtually nothing for social science education.”
He lamented that, “You know very well that your public service will thrive on good managers but you haven’t invested in training good managers at the university level anyway so why are you complaining about not having good managers at the public services.”
“You’ve invested in producing your engineers but you didn’t even invest enough in them so you have engineers who are not quite ready and you have managers who are even less ready. That is the problem that we have,” Professor Aryeetey noted.
The University of Ghana Vice Chancellor observed that, “Until developing countries begin to see which aspects of what disciplines we need most as priority we will have this problem.”
