The Executive Director of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has admitted that the myriad of strikes in the labour front have put authorities at the Commission under a lot of pressure.George Smith Graham was however quick to add that the commission will be firm and fair in carrying out their constitutional mandate. His comments come ahead of a planned meeting, Wednesday, with members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) who are threatening a nationwide strike if FWSC does not quickly resolve their grievances with respect to the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).Government pharmacists have also issued a threat to lock up their pharmacies after the Easter celebrations if their salaries are not reviewed.Smith Graham denied assertions the Commission has been overwhelmed by the plethora of strikes but admitted the Commission is under some amount of pressure and still has some structural challenges. He said the Commission was barely a year when the SSSS was introduced and therefore had to implement the new policy whilst putting its own structures in place. That notwithstanding, he maintained the Commission will not renege on its responsibility in providing, equitable salaries to all.He said they will be meeting members of UTAG on Wednesday to listen to their grievances and find possible solutions to them.He cautioned however that the Commission will be firm in the meeting with all the labour unions in order not create any impression of preferential treatment to any specific union.Graham said the new policy is seeking to prevent the situation in which one union will think it has been unfairly treated and will therefore demand for increases, a situation he said disrupted the previous salary policies. The Commission will be firm and fair in carrying out its duties, he assured.
