President John Mahama on Tuesday filed his 2012 Tax returns at the Tax Kinbu Office of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority Office in Accra.Speaking to Joy News’ Presidential Correspondent, Seth Kwame Boateng, the President stressed the need for all Ghanaians to pay their taxes in other to enhance the country’s growth and development.“All the good things that we want; the roads, utility services and others come from our taxes and we can only get them when we pay our taxes. I hope my symbolic gesture will help the Ghana Revenue Authority in their public education and awareness that everybody should pay their taxes”, he noted.
Asked why he should pay taxes since the president doesn’t have to do so, by law, the President explained that “even as president, if you have any other income, apart from your official income, you are supposed to pay tax”.Earlier in the day, President John Mahama had posted on his facebook wall:
“It's a rainy Tuesday morning after Easter. This morning, I will be visiting the Kinbu Office of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the GRA to file my tax returns before going to the Office to preside over a Cabinet meeting”.
Article 68 (5) of the 1992 Constitution exempts the President from paying taxes. It is nonetheless incumbent on the President to file his tax returns every year.
President Mahama used the opportunity of filing his tax returns to interact with the management and staff of the Office of the Domestic Tax Revenue Division.
