Some students of the University of Ghana are unhappy about plans by the authorities to introduce a feeding programme for them.Authorities have proposed to charge every student one hundred cedis a month in order to roll out the programme. But the students are not convinced it will work. Authorities have declined comment for now.According to the Ugfile.com, a website for the tertiary students "Starting in the 2013/2014 academic year, all freshmen will be required to pick at least one of 3 meal plans including; breakfast, breakfast and lunch or breakfast, lunch and supper, before they can complete their on-line registration; a requirement for enrollment for a semester. Continuing students, though welcomed to participate in the meal plan, will however not be obliged to register for it."The move is premised on a report that food prepared by private food vendors was very unhygienic. Some students who spoke to Joy News' Beatrice Adu feel the plan to feed adults is childish, and unnecessary. Others feel it is an attempt by the authorities to exploit students. This is will not be the first time students are to be fed on campus. Under the leadership of the first president of Ghana Dr Kwame Nkrumah, students in the University were fed three times a day.It was reported that the program was well patronized that students allegedly embarked on demonstrations for eating too much chicken when there was enough fish at the Tema harbour.
