Some National Democratic Congress supporters in Kumasi have vandalized the party’s regional office in protest over the nomination of Kojo Bonsu as Mayor. The aggrieved supporters, numbering about 50, reportedly held the regional executives hostage accusing them of being behind the appointment of the former Managing Director of Goil. President John Mahama last week nominated Mr Kojo Bonsu as KMA boss in fulfillment of section 243(1) of the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana and section 20(1) of the Local Government Act 1993, Act 462. But the supporters are not happy with the nomination. They told Nhyira Fm’s Kofi Asante, the president’s nominee is not a true party man. They also accused the party’s regional executives of not consulting them before the nominee was appointed. Edwin Adade, spokesperson for the aggrieved supporters told Kofi Asante they locked the offices because the executives failed to give them any “sensible answer” why Mr Bonsu was appointed. “We thought the Ashanti Region executives gave the name to the president. That is the reason why we locked the office. We asked the party executives and they couldn’t give us a sensible answer. That is why we sacked them and locked the office. “We have now released them to start work so [that] next time when they are doing anything they will inform the foot-soldiers. They shouldn’t take decisions on their own and appoint anyone they like,” he warned. According to Kofi Asante the executives managed to escape the attack and took refuge at the office of the regional coordinating council premises. The Ashanti Regional Minister Eric Opoku who assumed office, Tuesday, intervened, assuring the supporters that the regional executives had no hand in the appointment of the new Mayor. The Youth organiser of the party Kweku Boahene said the issue has been resolved amicably. Even though he agrees with the president's power to nominate, he said, a nominee with an experience of the local government system would have been appreciated. He hinted however that the nominee must be able to lobby the assembly members before he will be approved as KMA boss.
