The Ghana Medical Association(GMA)has condemned comments made by Health Minister, Sherry Ayitey on Joy FM’s news and analysis programme, News Night on Monday, which sought to downplay the impact of the Doctors’ industrial action.According to Ms. Ayitey, the strike by the doctors which began on Monday, had not reached an alarming state as many had portrayed. She faulted the media for blowing the issue out of proportion. The GMA announced over the weekend that its members would not be available to attend to out-patient cases at all government hospitals, beginning Monday April 8, 2013.It followed the insistence of the GMA not to abide by a ruling upheld by the National Labour Commission on Friday April 5, 2013 concerning the payment schedule for the Doctors salary arrears.Speaking on Badwam on Adom TV Tuesday, President of GMA, Dr. Opoku Adusei described the Minister’s comments as unfortunate adding that such comments only raise anger among striking doctors. He stated "if the Minister wants to see people die she will have it soon".He said while The President on one hand President is trying to find solutions to the problem, others such as the Minister of Health were stoking the situation. He however indicated their preparedness to call off the strike, if the President takes practical steps to resolve the issue.Meanwhile, Dr. Adusei has denied knowledge of any planned meeting with Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, purportedly scheduled for Wednesday April, 10, 2013.
