As heavy rainstorms displace over 600 people in the Agona East district in the Central region, authorities are desperately calling on the already stressed out NADMO to come to the aid of victims.
According to Adom News’ Central regional correspondent Isaac Ochem, over 200 houses have been affected in the four communities of Namanwura, Obrakwawu, Mankron and Mankron Junction.
Speaking to Joy News’ Seth Kwame Boateng on the plight of the displaced persons, Central Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong, who has been touring the affected areas, expressed grave concerns about the schools affected.
It is feared the situation which has also affected some schools may result in the closure of these schools if immediate measures are not instituted.
The minister was particularly worried that any delay in response to the “S.O.S” call would affect the examinations of the school children.
“We should work as quickly as possible to ensure that the schools are renovated so that these children can write their examinations without problems,” he emphasised.
He called on the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO) to urgently come to the aid of the victims in the district.
“The entire roof of the school building is completely ripped off, and individuals also have their houses affected. That is why I have asked the NADMO to provide an assessment of the situation to be forwarded to National Head quarters for some intervention”.
Meanwhile, the NADMO Coordinator, Kofi Porturphy, has disclosed that the organization has been unable to deal with disaster situations in the country because it owes its suppliers over one hundred and sixty million Ghana Cedis.
Even though the disaster management agency has been widely criticized for its inability to respond to the recent disasters that have plagued some parts of the country, Mr. Portuphy has blamed it on lack of resources from government.
“In the last four months to the end of the year, nobody gave us a pesewa…our warehouses are empty”, he lamented. The National Coordinator made the remarks on Asempa FM.
