Checks at the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra Wednesday April 24, show Medical Assistants and Nurses are ensuring uninterrupted health delivery as doctors continue their industrial action.
Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Eric Sifah told Myjoyonline even though the number of patients received daily have been dropping from an average of 300 to a little over 180 since Monday, medical assistants and nurses have been very helpful in dealing with medical cases.
Dr Sifah also said there are some doctors on standby helping with emergency cases. He explained that the doctors stabilise emergency cases and later refer patients to either the Police or 37 Military hospital.
The children's hospital looked deserted with empty wards, when Myjoyonline visited the place Wednesday afternoon.
But Dr Sifah indicated the wards are empty because most of the child patients have been treated and discharged.
A meeting between doctors and government on Tuesday April 23, two days after doctors withdrew emergency services from all public hospitals across the country, ended in a deadlock.
Metro Director of Health Services, Dr. George Mensah who was briefed this morning about the situation in all government hospitals within the Accra Metro has also confirmed a dwindling rate of patients at hospitals across his jurisdiction.
