Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says he was not invited to the commissioning of the Bui Hydro-electric Power Project held in the Brong Ahafo Region. The first unit of the dam which will be commissioned by President John Mahama today will generate a total of amount of 404 megawatts (MG) of power to augment energy supply in the country. The Kufuor government signed the contract with the Chinese engineering and procurement organization, Sinohydro in April 2007, to construct the dam that would add 400 megawatts of power to the national grid. The construction of the Dam cost the government of Ghana $60million out of the total project cost of $622m which was largely funded by the Chinese government. The project is part of the overall strategy to triple the country’s energy supply capacity from the current 2,000 megawatts to 6,000 megawatts by 2015.For a government that re-initiated a project which was abandoned in the 60s, it was expected that ex-president John Kufuor who led the erstwhile NPP administration would be invited for the commissioning of the project. But in an exclusive interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, former President Kufuor expressed grave displeasure that he was not invited for the commissioning ceremony. He said it is very painful to be sidelined in the commissioning of a project which was very dear to his heart.Mr. Kufuor recalled the difficulty his administration went through with the Chinese government just to get funding for the project and wondered whether all that hustle was worth it.He called on all Ghanaians to condemn government in no uncertain terms for the deliberate act. This not withstanding, former President Kufuor was happy at the final completion of the first phase.
