Chief Executive of Bui Power Authority (BPA), Mr Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, is certain the remaining three phases of the total 400 MW Bui hydroelectric projects will be fully operational by the end of this year. Speaking on the Super Morning Show Monday, Mr Amissah-Arthur stated that the Bui project could be a major contributor to solving the country’s power problems. President John Mahama on 3rd May, commissioned a 133 MW unit of project which is currently augmenting energy supply in the country. The project, which is estimated at US$622 million, is being financed by the government of Ghana's US$60 million and two credits by the China Exim Bank. Mr Amissah-Arthur, however, cautioned against seeing the BPA as a total solution to the power outages in any part of the country. “Bringing a new production doesn’t deal with the constraints in the distribution network, if your outages are caused by distribution challenges, Bui cannot do anything about it”, he stressed. According him, when the Bui dam is in full operation, it will contribute 20% to the nation’s hydroelectric capacity. Amissah-Arthur admitted cost of energy from the Bui project is higher than energy from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, but this, in his view will not put major pressure on electricity tariffs in the country. One of the major benefits of a hydro project, according to Mr Amissah-Arthur is that, the cost of energy stays fixed for a long time (50 years in some cases), as compared to thermal plants which are powered by petroleum products whose prices keep fluctuating. Mr Amissah-Arhtur stated BPA has learnt a lot oflessons from the Akosombo and Kpong projects to improve on the skills and technical knowledge needed for efficient management of the project. He was confident the project, which has received all the funds needed for its construction, will be completed between November and December this year.
