Parliament’s Ranking Committee member on local government is pushing for a copy of JOY FM’s Hotline documentary on rabies titled “BARKING-TO-KILL” to be distributed to all district assemblies across the country.
According to the Sunyani East MP Kwesi Cheremeh, the educative nature of the documentary warrants that it is given the necessary currency and action taken on it.
Barking to Kill explores how rabies, a preventable disease, is killing people in the country.
Seth Kwame Boateng who did the documentary also looked at some other ways rabies can be distributed aside the normal transmission mode.
Hon. Kwesi Cheremeh said since attention has been drawn to the disease as a serious one, he will raise it on the floor of Parliament for immediate action to be taken. According to him, he will impress upon the committee to take key decisions to deal with the situation.
“My recommendation is that the documentary is brought to the attention of all the district assemblies in the country so that they will know the role they will have to play in ensuring that human safety is really guaranteed especially when it comes to dog bite and the transfer of rabies to human beings which has caused several deaths over the years. It must be given them so that when they are having their meetings, they will take about 30 minutes to listen to what has happened in the country over the years because of rabies; that will re-awaken consciousness about what they need to do in respect of rabies.
“It is of much great concern to me and I think to the committee because ones I have had this opportunity to listen to your documentary, I will bring it to the attention of the committee so that we can also discuss it in our outreach programs. We will also discuss it with the district assemblies wherever we will be. Whenever we get to a particular district assembly, we would want to find out whether they have a bye-law on stray animals and if they don’t then we can also advise them to do it quickly and probably bring to the attention of the documentary that you have which is a very good one and an educative one," he said.
