The acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohamed Ahmed Alhassan, is expected in Kumasi to get firsthand information on the worrying security situation in the Ashanti regional capital.Over the last week alone five people have been killed in the open. Residents say they are living in fear following the incidents.Three people have in the past week been killed in the region from two different shooting incidents. On Monday, residents in Atwima Boko, a suburb of Kumasi lynched two suspected armed robbers. In a latest development, Police in Asokwa are investigating an incident in which unidentified persons set a Mercedes Benz saloon car belonging to the chief of Asokwa a suburb of Kumasi, Nana Fe-Baamoah II, on fire in front of his palace. The attackers also left a written note at the door to the palace telling the chief to expect further attacks.According to the Chief, “Kumasi is not safe at all".The acting IGP is determined to help deal with the security situation in the Ashanti regional capital.
The police in Kumasi are, however, keeping their tabs on gun manufacturers they suspect are supplying gangs with weapons.Gun manufacturing is a flourishing industry but since locally manufactured weapons are deemed illegal, the industry is operating out of the public view.Mr Kwesi Aning, a Criminologist, on the other hand, blame the gun attacks on the country's legislation on gun manufacturing and acquisition.
