The Ghana Education Service (GES) has begun investigations into alleged attempts by authorities of the Achimota Senior High School to de-boardenise one of its students because she is sickle cell patient. Head of Public Relations at the GES, Charles Parker Allotey confirmed receipt of an official complaint about the matter to Joy News, but declined to disclose the identity of the complainant. The school is said to have discovered the girl’s status as a sickle cell patient and asked her to continue her education as a day student. However, parents of the 15-year-old girl said they will go to court to challenge the decision of the school. Eric Tieku, lawyer for the girl’s family, told Joy News’ Fred Smith the girl is at home because of the situation. He stressed there is no law in Ghana which stipulates that sickle cell students cannot be boarders. According to the lawyer, the school authorities should have consulted the parents of the student before taking the decision to de-boardinise her. He said if the school authorities fail to resolve issue before close of the week, it will be resolved in the court.
