Despite criticizing government for not consulting them in the latest fuel price hikes, transport operators have said an increase in transport fares is not likely. The operators have expressed outrage over the National Petroleum Authority’s two to three percent increase in fuel prices which took effect from Saturday. Petrol has gone up by three percent and selling at GH¢9.50p per gallon, Gas oil by two percent and selling at GH¢9.50p per gallon whilst LPG is also now selling at GH¢25 per every 12.5 kg cylinder after a three percent hike in price. The General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council, Alhaji Aliu Baba who also doubles as the Chairman of National Transport Fares Committee however told Joy News, passengers are this time around likely to be spared of any transport fare increases. According to him,“This is a very insignificant or minimal increase. What we have done is that we have spoken to all operators and the drivers to exercise patience because we want to meet within the week and then we can come out with a press release to that effect.” “For now my office has directed that there should be no increase because looking at the previous standing orde, the understanding initially was that if it is less than five percent, we just have to let it go … but generally the way I look at it three percent increase we could manage it,” he noted. Alhaji Aliu Baba added that their decision is to reaffirm their commitment to pursue not only their interest as transport operators but also the general public. Joy News checks have revealed that the increases are yet to reflect at many fuel stations as well as transport terminals in the capital.
