Principal of the Wa Health Training Institute (HATS), George. Y. Segnitome has expressed worry about the school's continuous dependence on an old canteen and makeshift structures they have been operating in since the school's inception eight years ago.
Mr. Segnitome stated that it is due to the limited facilities that have made them to turn away qualified applicants and appealed to the Wa Municipal Assembly to take a cue from other assemblies and build a permanent structure for them.
He made the statement during the matriculation of seventy (70) students of the school in Wa.
The school was started to train young men and women with the requisite qualification and enthusiasm to work in the health sector to fill the staffing gaps in the health service facilities.
However, eight years down the line, it cannot boast of any building structure of its own except relying on the dilapidated old canteen and makeshift structures it has inherited from the Wa Regional Hospital.
Mr. Segnitome cited what he said is the rapid infrastructural development district assemblies have bequeathed to sister institutions and hoped his assembly will learn from that.
"We pray the Regional Coordinating Council, the Municipal Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament for Wa Central and other stakeholders to treat us to similar recipes. They should consider the school when apportioning their next round of projects,’’ he pleaded.
Mr. Segnitome stated that as a matter of urgency, they need to rehabilitate a room for use as library since the present library space is inappropriate.
He further stated that it is their intention to upgrade the health assistants training certificate to a diploma awarding registered general nursing status.
He hinted that they have the human capacity in terms of tutors to do so.
"We have a skills laboratory adequately equipped and also have the library stuff for the purpose," he added.
The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr. Ephraim Avea Nsoh expressed his happiness about the pass rate of the students over the years and asked them to do more.
‘‘Students must remember that they have to work hard. At the same time lecturers must also understand, the more students fail; the more there is slur on your own achievements," the minister counseled.
Dr. Nsoh tasked the students upon completion to translate what they have learnt into practice because many patients are frustrated about the attitude of nurses.
The minister directed the Wa Municipal Assembly to turn their attention to the school to achieve the desired results.
He also stated that he will meet with the health minister and other stakeholders to see what could be done in the shortest possible time to salvage the school.
