Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Florence Rachel Appoh, has condemned the abuse by teachers and other staffs of girls in various schools across the country, saying such an action ruined their future forever. Speaking as a Guest of Honour at the Speech and Prize Giving Day of St Anne’s Senior High Vocational School, the Deputy Minister said her outfit has recorded several reports on sexual abuse in schools and related early forced marriages by parents for girls in the school going brackets. “According to the Children’s Act, it is a crime for any child under 18 years of age to be engaged in any sexual relations that will ruin their future”, she stated. But she noted that child sexual abuse prevention strategies require the active involvement and participation of individuals, families, churches, traditional leaders and society as a whole. She stated that her ministry have ensured that most district offices have gender desk officers to handle all forms of gender based violence, at the local government level. “The Social Welfare Department and the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, are all agencies at the district level that collaborate to deal with gender based violence”, she noted. Honourable Rachel Appoh noted that “in spite of these well-meaning efforts, the level of sophistication of society coupled with the rapid urbanization of our countries pose a big challenge to us all in the fight against this menace”. She suggested that all stakeholders involved in the fight against girl child abuse should aim at significantly improving the skills and numbers of social psychologist in schools across the country to deal with sexual abuse at all levels.
