Professional Network North (PRONET North) has enrolled journalists in the Upper West Region on its developmental Partnering for Inclusive Education in Northern Ghana (PEING) Project aimed at promoting education in northern Ghana. The workshop was on the theme “Agenda for Journalist in Education Platform” and was attended by several reporters and radio presenters in the region. It focused on making journalists assume developmental roles in society through their reportage. In his opening remarks, the Director of ProNet North, Mr. Martin Derry stressed that the media are important in highlighting the key challenges most young people go through in society and hoped that their participation in the workshop will increase their capacities to be agents and facilitators of development. “As a practitioner in development in the Upper West region since 1995, my organization has been striving to see how best we can get the media more strategically as a partner in the work that we do. This is because although we begun as a service provision organization we have realized that we can only maximize our impact if the media become a partner in a more sustainable way”. In addition, he prayed the media to champion education in the region and bring to light the challenges of education especially for girls, children with disability and migrant children. He also expressed his gratitude to Star Ghana for the support given so far in organizing the workshop to equip the media. Retired Broadcast Journalist, Mr. Chris Alalbila also shared knowledge on how the media can ensure adequate reportage to promote the education of girls, children with disabilities and migrant children in marginalized communities in the northern sector. The PEING Project being funded by Star Ghana is built on previous programs that have been carried out and will be implemented in two districts in two regions in northern Ghana. A total number of 60 communities within the Wa West municipality and Nkoranza North district shall be covered through this initiative. Participants were taken through topics on the role of the media, civil society organizations and community leadership in promoting development in society. The workshop also facilitated the formation of Journalists in Education Platform. It is a collaborative effort between media personnel in the region and ProNet North and will not only bring to fore the projects being embarked upon to create change but also to expose the unheard problems and issues at the grassroots level.
