Nana Yaw Akwada, the CEO of Bureau of Public Safety says there is the need for public institutions to move from a rapid response approach to fighting fires to a more proactive one.
His advice comes after fire razed down the Makola Number 2 Market in Accra Tuesday night.
Mr. Akwada, a certified occupational safety specialist, acknowledged the possible causes of the fire could include arson and faulty electrical cables.
But he rated the incessant spate of recent fire outbreaks as evidence of ‘system failure’.
He said following a statement by President Mahama that government was not ruling out arson, there has been no response from the National Security, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Ghana Fire Service and other institutions of state to contain future occurrences.
Although there is the Ghana Fire and Rescue Services meant to educate the public and particularly train traders on how to respond to fires, very little had been done, he noted.
Akwada recalled a directive by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) that markets be closed by 6 pm each day to allow officials to inspect and secure the markets as part of measures to nip in the bud any possible disaster.
If it were six terrorist attacks on the country, we would not have sat back doing nothing, he conjectured.
"One more fire should not be countered in this country," he stated, urging, it is time for public institutions to move from an emergency-minded approach to a more proactive approach in tackling such situations.
Tuesday night’s fire is the latest to have gutted markets in the capital, in fact it’s the sixth market fire in less than two months with the Kantamanto fire still fresh on the minds of people. On May 5, 2013 fire broke out at Kantamanto, a popular market at the central business district of Accra.
In January this year, at least 17 shops at the Suame Magazine in the Kumasi Metropolis of Ashanti, were flattened by fire that swept through the area.
In February another fire engulfed AnchorGold Paint building at North Industrial Area
On Jan 12, 2013 it was reported that wild spreading fire engulfed the BBC Industrials Co. Gh. Ltd ..., manufacturers of LeyLand paint at Tema industrial area.
