The United Nations has recommended the use of human urine for fertilizer.The urine is said to be good for fertilizing vegetable crops such as cucumber, tomatoes and potatoes and many other crops.According to a Viasat 1 news report, the urine should be kept in an air-tight container for a month and later diluted with water. One large sized voltic bottle container full of urine is ideal for one-square meter of crops, the report said.It should be applied three times a month and at the root of the crop.But they warned the application of urine fertilizer should cease a month to harvest time to prevent urine residue in the crop.Urine is rich in nutrients such as nitrates, phosphorus and potassium - vital ingredients of fertilizer, in an appropriate balance, to maintain soil fertility and increase productivity.In countries like Nepal, a urine bank was officially launched on 17 May, 2010, and was inaugurated by Dr. Roshan Raj Shrestha, Chief Technical Advisor for Water for Asian Cities Programme, UN-HABITAT, South Asia Region.Farms in South Africa are also said to be taking advantage of this free excreted matter turned resource.
