Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Chief Executive, on Monday announced that rehabilitation work would soon begin on the Ga Community Centre. He said the design for the project has already been completed and the contract would soon be awarded. Mr Vanderpuije made the statement when he inspected on-going renovation works at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra. The visit by the mayor was also to debunk allegations by the Coalition of Concerned Ga Groups (CCGG) that the AMA boss had neglected the Palace and other important structures of the Ga Traditional Council. The first phase of the rehabilitation works at the Ga Mantse Palace include the provision of four offices, four washrooms and two conference halls for the Ga Traditional Council. The second phase of the project includes the refurbishment of the sheds at the durbar grounds whilst the third phase involves the renovation of the Palace’s main hall. Mr Vanderpuje promised that the AMA would rehabilitate all the structures at the palace to suit the culture and tradition of the Ga people. He also said though the community centre belongs to the Ga Traditional System, the AMA is the custodian of the facility and cannot handover the centre in its present state to the Traditional Council. He adeed that the community centre would have offices for the seven traditional divisions of Accra. Mr Vanderpuije also announced that the Salaga market has been awarded for rehabilitation works to begin shortly. Mr Steve Acheampong, the contractor working on the Ga Mantse Palace assured the mayor and his entourage that the renovation works would be completed before the celebration of the Ga Homowo festival. He noted that so far, they have done the major part of the work and that the rest would take about three weeks to complete. Nii Tackie Komme, Ga Seitse, assured that the youth, the chiefs and people in the Ga traditional area were prepared to work with the AMA to ensure development in the Ga state. He commended Mr Vanderpuje for the various infrastructural projects that he has initiated since assuming office to bring about improvement in the lives of the people.
