The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says it is frustrated by the lack of action to resolve the impasse between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and government pharmacists. The pharmacists have been on strike for the past three months over their grading on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS). President of the GMA, Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Adusei said there are concerns about drugs in stock at hospitals going bad. Dr Adusei-Opoku also said the pharmacists’ strike is affecting the work of doctors because they work as a team. He noted that “teamwork and healthcare delivery is delayed” as doctors are unable to function properly. He said “[Fair] Wages and Salaries Commission and the law, and by extension government, must not play the ostrich and think the pharmacy issue will solve by itself”. The committee set up by government to resolve the impasse has submitted its report to the Chief of Staff, Mr Prosper Bani. Antwi Boasiako-Sekyere, Deputy Minister for Employment and Social Welfare, and chairman of the committee said their recommendations on the way forward has been presented to government. “I believe that government will act very swiftly on some of the recommendations and get the issues resolved”, he said. He however condemned the strike, saying he does not think it was a good labour practice.
