The medical doctor accused of carrying out life-threatening surgeries without a licence has defended his actions, describing investigations into his operations as "petty". Dr. Dominic Obeng-Andoh, owner of the Obengfo Hospital at Weija is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police and the Dental and Medical Council. Joy News investigations revealed that Dr Obeng-Andoh’s surgical procedures have left some of his patients with life-threatening complications. Family of a man who died at his hospital has also petitioned the Medical and Dental Council on the matter. But speaking to Joy News, Dr. Obeng-Andoh said he will co-orporate with investigators, although he is convinced they are being petty. He confirmed the charges against him by the CID to Joy News earlier. He said he had been charged with making claims through advertisements about cures for diseases when in fact he did not have such capabilities. But Dr Obeng-Andoh said “I find that a bit petty”. He claimed that as a qualified medical doctor, he could perform surgeries. “You don’t need to be a consultant to do surgery”, he stressed. Dr. Obeng-Andoh said he does not require any special license to carry out the surgeries that have formed the basis of the allegations against him. According to him, he has been co-operating with the authorities looking into the matter, and would continue to do so. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Public Safety, a non-profit organisation (NGO), is asking all victims of Dr. Obeng-Andoh to come to them for assistance in seeking justice. The NGO works towards improving public health through advocacy, education and development programmes. Nana Yaw Akwada, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bureau told Joy News lawyers and the state should come together to extract the records of patients who have been to the Obengfo Hospital to facilitate the process of seeking justice for the victims.
