The Greater Accra Regional Security Council is seeking an injunction on the installation of chiefs within the Teshie area following clashes that left one person dead on Thursday June 20.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Julius Debrah, who chairs the regional Security Council said the injunction on installation of chiefs in the area is to achieve lasting peace while they deploy security officers to control the installation of traditional rulers.
According to him, Thursday’s clashes were a result of the installation of a new chief and hence the Council has directed the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to go to Court or the Regional House of Chiefs to put a hold on further installations until the issue is resolved.
The clashes left three people in critical condition. Four suspected assailants are also in Police custody while a man hunt has been launched for those who fled the scene.
Mr Debrah said apart from the uniformed Police patrolling the area, there are also plain clothes security officers gathering intelligence to prevent reprisals.
Executive Director of the West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Emmanuel Bombande, believes the Regional and the National House of Chiefs must urgently step into the matter.
He explained that the two institutions have the jurisdiction over the Teshie situation because the Constitution does not allow the Executive to intervene in chieftaincy issues.
Meanwhile, information available to Joy News suggests there will be an emergency Municipal Security meeting on Friday June 21. The meeting will be chaired by Mr Daniel Amartey Mensah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE)of the area.
Also, due to the disturbances, the MCE has asked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to suspend load shedding in the area for security reasons.
