Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) Rudolph Beckley, has accused some National Service personnel and beneficiaries of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA), of stealing vital documents belonging to them.
According to Mr. Rudolph Beckley, some GYEEDA and National Service personnel doing internships at the DVLA’s head office, have been stealing road worthy certificates and other vital documents with the intent to selling them to drivers.
He made the revelation in an interaction with staff of the Eastern Regional office of the DVLA at Koforidua, where he had visited to have a firsthand account of operational challenges there.
“A lot of pilfering that goes on in our offices is done by the National Service, NYEP personnel or GYEEDA beneficiaries. We have allowed you to come and understudy; is it a crime to do that? So how come you do this to us, to the extent of stealing our products and selling them out to unqualified persons.
“Once you take a road worthy certificate or steal it and take it out there, do you understand the implication? It means that you have allowed a vehicle in bad condition to ply the road. The vehicle can kill you and your family,” a worried Mr. Beckley stated.
He cautioned, his outfit may be compelled to shut the door to persons posted from the two institutions if the practice does not stop.
“I’m sending this note, if we have allowed these people to understudy us and this is how they will treat us then I think the law must be looked at again; we do not want these people,” he said.
Mr. Beckley also expressed concern over activities of middle men popularly known as “Goro Boys” which he said, are tarnishing the image of the agency and tasked the staff to expose them.
He charged the staff to work hard to restore the Authority’s sunken image while pledging to institute a number of training and capacity building programs to enable the staff execute their mandate.
Mr. Rudolph Beckley earlier visited the Eastern Regional Minister, Hellen Adwoa Ntoso where he called for the support and collaboration from the Regional Coordinating Council and stakeholders.
On his part, the Eastern Regional Manager of the DVLA, Mr. Joseph Obosu expressed worry over the lack of space which he said is a major operational challenge.
Mr. Obosu therefore pleaded with the Authority to source funding to support expansion works at the regional office.
